  • How do residential well systems work?

Residential well systems typically utilize either a submersible pump or a jet pump to extract water from the ground. The submersible pump is placed underwater, while the jet pump is situated above ground. Both types of pumps create water pressure for household use. In some cases, a large storage tank is employed to hold water before it's pumped to the house.
  • Do wells run out of water?

Wells can indeed run dry due to various factors. These include decreased precipitation, lowered water tables, excessive water usage, leaks in the system, sandy soil conditions, and well infill. Some of these issues may stem from improper management, while others are a result of natural circumstances.
  • How many years does a water well last?

A typical water well has an expected lifespan of between 30 to 50 years.
  • How deep is a well?

Wells that are drilled typically extend to depths of 100 feet or more.
  • How do I keep my well water clean?

To maintain clean well water, begin by flushing the interior of the well casing with a garden hose or bucket for 5-10 minutes. Next, turn on all faucets in your home and let the water run until you detect a strong chlorine odor at each outlet. Finally, close all faucets and allow the chlorine solution to remain in the well and plumbing system for a minimum of 12 hours.
  • How does a well replenish itself?

A well replenishes itself through a natural process. When water is extracted from a well, gravity causes water from the surrounding saturated rocks to flow into the well, replacing the pumped water. This maintains the water level in the well, which is generally consistent with the local water table.
  • How can you tell if your well is low?

One indicator of a low well is when your pump operates for extended periods. Typically, the pump is submerged deep underwater. However, as water levels decrease, the pump will work continuously to maintain the tank's water level and pressure. Another sign is if your pump frequently turns on and off, suggesting it's struggling to maintain consistent water pressure due to low water levels.
  • Can a well run dry in the winter?

To prevent your well from running dry, it's important to understand the seasonal fluctuations in your local water table. Generally, water levels are higher in late fall. However, in areas that experience freezing temperatures, water levels can decrease again during winter months.
  • What are good questions to ask about a well?

When considering a property with a well, it's advisable to inquire about the following: the water quality in the area, local well regulations, the condition and quality of the specific well, its water output capacity, the property size, whether it's a drilled well, and the age of the well system.
